O'Leary/LearyFrom: CommentsO'Sullivan - Response to Nancie O'SullivanFrom: South Carolina CommentsMs. O'Sullivan, My name is Clarke Thompson and I live in Columbia, South Carolina. My maternal great, great grandmother was born an O'Sullivan but married my great, great grandfather James Clarke from Greer, South Carolina. Where the Clarke family homestead existed until4 or 5 years ago. My grandfather, James O'Sullivan Clarke (1914-1970) carried the name and passed it to his son and my uncle, James, Jr. (Jim) and he to his son and my cousin, James, III (Jay). They live in Atlanta now. I do not know Betty O'Sullivan's past except I have been told we are related to a Captain Florence O'Sullivan from Ireland who also had homes in Charleston, SC and Barbados. He was a slave trader between Barbados and Charleston during the late 1600's and early 1700's I believe, and he worked for one of the first governors of Carolina. He was well known and shows up in many South Carolina historical records. Sullivan's Island, about a mile north by water from Charleston, was named for him and I read that he lived on this then uninhabited island, now expensive resort property. I also read that he did not have the best of reputations which is why he lived away from the general populace located in downtown Charleston. Beyond being a slave trader there were rumors that he had molested a young girl or something like that (which he denied) so most folks found his living "away" on the island just fine. I do not know his past family in Ireland nor do I have info on the link between he and Betty O'Sullivan Clarke. I would love to know more if you do. I have spent most of my efforts trying to identify the past of my first Thompson who came to the US from Ireland in the early 1800's, one John Knox Thompson. Nancy, email me at ctthompso@mindspring.com if I can help any further. Good Luck! GEARYFrom: Coachford Parish CommentsBeginning my Ireland search for my GGGGrandfather John T.
