Allihies welcoming village, with
its brightly coloured houses, is near the tip of the Beara
Peninsula in West
Cork, Ireland, a wonderful setting on Irelands scenic
coast.
The drive from here along the north coast of the Beara Peninsula
to Eyeries and Ardgroom following the signposted 'Ring of Beara Drive'
offers superb views of the coast and
mountains of Iveragh, the peninsula across Kenmare Bay
which contains the 'Ring of Kerry' tourist route.
Ballydonegan Beach, just below Allihies village, was created by
crushed stones from the old Allihies mines. Allihies
was the centre of a rich copper-mining district. Cornish
workers were brought over in the 19th Century as technical
experts and remains of their 'Cornish Village' can
still be seen. Around the workings you can pick up nice
rocks glittering with pyrites - 'fool's gold' - care needs
to be taken if exploring here as there are unguarded mineshafts.
Tourists to the Beara Peninsula area can enjoy a number of
activities and sights while visiting Allihies such as
water sports, bird watching, scuba diving, cycling,
Dolphin & Whale watching, and the ring of Beara driving
tour. The area around Allihies offers a number of locally
made arts and crafts to be enjoyed. The Michael Dwyer
Festival which takes place over the June Weekend in
Allihies is a traditional music festival which draws
musicians and music lovers alike from all over for the
sessions and competitions. Michael Dwyer was a well
know and respected fiddle and tin whistle player from
local Ardgroom.
