Enjoy some of the beautiful scenery in Goleen and take a drive up to Mizen Head to visit the Mizen Head project and enjoy the experience of crossing the bridge to the former lightkeepers quarters, not for the faint hearted! Continue with a drive to the laid back village of Crookhaven and onto enjoy Barleycove for its magnificent beach and a visit to Baltimore for all those seafaring and diving enthusiasts. Lough Hyne near Skibbereen a salt water lake, made a designated Marine Nature Reserve in 1981. The woods of Knockomagh are popular with walkers offering wonderful views of Lough Hyne and the West Cork coastline. Enjoy the wonderful islands off West Cork which are close to Goleen such as Sherkin Island and Cape Clear Island, Whiddy and Bere Island. Drive onto Durrus and enjoy the scenic route by car or bicycle through Ahakista, Durrus and Kilcrohane. Sheeps Head Peninsula is noted for its walking route.

 

Cape Clear Island, West Cork
  Cape Clear Island in West Cork Ireland can be reached by a 40 minute boat trip from either Baltimore or Schull. An island only 3 miles long and 1.5 mile wide it is a gaeltacht island where Irish is spoken as the first language and can be learned on the island at one of the two Summer colleges. It has a population of roughly 150 people. Cape Clear Island off West Cork is a paradise for bird watchers, walkers and people interested in learning some skills in the form of chicken and goat farming, beekeeping and courses in wildlife.  Cape Clear Island offers an "away from it all" scenic visit, with its heather and gorse lined hills, stone lined fields.

Lough Hyne
  Lough Hyne just a short distance from Skibbereen and Goleen, is a saltwater lake, made a designated Marine Nature Reserve in 1981. The Lough Hyne area in West Cork is a popular place for walking in the close by Knockomagh woods which has wonderful views of Lough Hyne, Roaringwater Bay and the West Cork coastline.

Mizen Head Visitor Centre
  Mizen Head Visitor Centre can be found by following the Mizen Head Drive a short distance from Goleen. Mizen Head Signal Station which can be accessed by the famous Arched Bridge is 100 years old this year used by the light keepers in olden times. The Visitor Centre in Mizen gives a insight into the life and hobbies of the light keepers long ago. History of the flora and faura and geological history of the Mizen area, history of the Fastnet  Rock Lighthouse, history of Goleen parish and more. Enjoy the cafe onsite at the Mizen Head Visitor Centre.

Sherkin Island
  Sherkin Island in West Cork Ireland, with a population of roughly 100 people is 3 miles long by 1.5 miles wide. Sherkin Island can be reached by ferry from Baltimore which takes 10 minutes. The busiest day on the island is when Sherkin Regatta is celebrated July or August.  Enjoy the many beaches Trabawn, Cow Strand, Silver Strand or strolling around the old lighthouse and ruined Franciscan Abbey.
