The South Mall is one of the main thoroughfares in Cork City. It runs East to West from Parnell Place to The Grand Parade. Like many streets in Cork city centre it is built over channels of the river Lee. You will see large gateways at street level, under steps leading to a higher main door. These were once boathouses, when merchants arrived at their warehouses by water.
The first branch of the Provincial Bank Ltd. now part of the A.I.B. Plc, was built in 1825 and reconstructed in 1863/65 at the current location of A.I.B. Branch at 97 South Mall, Cork. In this remarkably beautiful building we find all the wonderful enrichment of renaissance architecture.
