Camden Fort Meagher Crosshaven. Camden Fort Meagher Crosshaven was constructed in the 16th century, to defend Cork Harbour and has been recently brought back to life with the help of passionate local volunteers.
A wonderful day of exploring Crosshavens military history can be experienced with a visit to Camden Fort Meagher Crosshaven It is an example of what the Coastal Artillery Forts would have looked like, the layout and a insight into the day to day activities and history of the Irish & British military. Its earliest fortification was dated 1550.
Playing an important part in the defence of Ireland, the west coast of England and Wales, due to its strategic position and commanding excellent views out over Cork Harbour and allowing all the shipping and sailing traffic to be monitored from there.
Enjoy a guided tour with one of our many informative volunteers on-site to answer any of your questions. Camden Fort Meagher Crosshaven and its Places of Interest, include entering by the bridge and main gate area, visiting the ticket office, Guardroom and cells. Walk down The Bright Tunnel to gain access to the underground area, an experience in itself, a good few steps!
There are several extremely well laid out Billets and Exhibitions giving a view of Naval Exhibition items, an WW1 Exhibition, Gunners Room and many of the old uniforms, and lots of military memorabilia. View the Granite Spiral Staircase. Visit the Brennan Torpedo Room and Launch area. Lots and lots of areas of interest, so allow time to explore it all. Take in the underground store area where the munitions and gunpowder was stored. With 65% of Camden Fort located underground it is made up of a number of tunnels and chambers allowing the family to explore. After all the exploring you can take a break at the Tea Rooms with seating area out on the harbour side decking area and its stunning views of Cork Harbour.
A 5 minute drive from Crosshaven village or a 15 minute walk up from the village.
