Baltimore in West Cork, a small but busy and lively port and popular sailing centre, south of Skibbereen and facing onto Roaringwater Bay and Carbery's Hundred Isles.

Regular ferries operate from here to the popular and much visited islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin Island and Heir Island. It is located on some of Irelands most beautiful coastline. Baltimore hosts a number of Summer time festivals and it offers some great traditional music, and lots of good food including some great sea food. Locally you have the Lough Hyne area where you can take in some wonderful walks at all levels, bird watching or take a climb up Knockomagh Hill. Baltimore is a great area also for the walking and cycling enthusiasts.

Take a visit to the restored Batimore Castle & Pirate Exhibition, the Castle, Dún na Séad built in the 1200's which overlooks the harbour was a holding of the O'Driscolls clan, who were one of the most important clans in West Cork, restored you can now visit the great hall and take in some great views from the battlements area.

The clan controlled the fishing of the area and could levy dues on all the fishing fleets who came to these rich fishing grounds. Today in the castle you can learn more of the Castles History and take in the Pirate Exhibition back to the 1600's and the archaeological details of the site. No trip to Baltimore would be complete without a stroll up to the Baltimore Beacon, perched on a hill at the entrance to Baltimore harbour in West Cork. Just a 20 minute walk out of town on quiet country roads, take in the wonderful scenery enroute and also from the Beacon, you will be rewarded with panaromic views out over the neighbouring islands from the position of the Beacon.

An extraordinary event in the history of Baltimore town was a raid in 1631 by Algerian pirates, when many of the inhabitants were slaughtered and about 200 others shipped off as slaves to North Africa.

Baltimore has a reputation for fine boat building. The Saoirse, in which Conor O'Brien sailed around the world in 1923, was Baltimore-built, there is a sailing school centre in the village

Festivals in Baltimore include the Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival also in May a weekend celebration of sailing and the traditional Irish timber sailing boats also held at the same time is the Baltimore Seafood Festival, where the best of local Baltimore Seafood is served up on shore, also Baltimore Fiddle Fair where national and international artists gather in May for workshops and music sessions in Baltimore.

For the garden enthusiasts there are a number of gardens open on the West Cork Garden Trail, where you can take some time out and visit these beautifully laid out gardens, just a selection at Inish Beg, Glebe Gardens, Bluebell Gardens Balldehob and Drishane House Castletownsend. Local beaches include Tragumna and wonderful swimming off the Islands Cape Clear, Sherkin Island and Heir Island

Tour Fastnet Rock with the Cape Clear Island Ferry which can depart from Baltimore or Schull piers, and hire some bikes on the Island and explore.

Baltimore is just a 90 minutes drive from Cork City, Ballydehob, Leap, Castletownshend, Drimoleague, so get out and enjoy exploring some of the nearby Irish towns and local villages.
