CORK GUIDE

Ballycotton

Ballycotton

Ballycotton enjoys the proximity of Midleton, Cloyne, Castlemartyr, Garryvoe, Shanagarry area, but it is a place apart, special. A rocky spur thrusting out into the sea, its cosy harbour side contrasts with its wild Atlantic cliff side, giving variety in scenery and climate.

Ballycotton has pure air, clean seawater, incomparably beautiful views and the tranquillity of being at the end-of-the-line. Accommodation varies from four star hotels to superb guesthouses, Bed & Breakfasts and self catering apartments. What does one do in Ballycotton? Indeed, one may just want to stand and gaze, or to laze around soaking up the sea's powerful energy.

Ballycotton Lighthouse

You could sit in a pub and hear the lore of Ballycotton Lighthouse and the wonderful work of the local Ballycotton Lifeboat crew, or enjoy a swim off Ballycotton Pier. There's also the cliff walk to Ballytrasna, risking the intoxication on this rugged goat track by the heady mix of furze-perfumed sea-wind and lark song. Larks apart, some 300 species of birds visit the place, making Ballycotton one of Europe's most famous bird-watching sites.

Ballycotton Cliff Walk and Ballycotton Lighthouse

Deep Sea angling - remembering that it gave birth to that sport in Ireland, Ballycotton is proud to facilitate it. From a non-tidal harbour productive angling marks can be reached in 20-40 minutes. Time to eat? The excellence and the variety of cuisine offered locally will probably surprise and certainly please you. As we say Au Revoir may we remind you that many visitors have been known to leave their hearts behind them here.

Ballycotton

Ballycotton 30 minutes drive East of Cork city is a hilly fishing port much favoured by deep sea anglers. It offers fantastic views over a boat filled harbour to a steep island crowned by a lighthouse. There is the Ballycotton Cliff Walk, and inland an extensive marshy bird sanctuary. Ballycotton also has its very own Hollywood connection. The famous actress Angela Langsbury from (Murder She Wrote) is a frequent visitor and a proud owner of a holiday home here. Marlon Brando spent some time here while filming the ill fated film Divine Rapture back in the early 1990's.

Mary Stanford Ballycotton

2 miles East of Ballycotton is Garryvoe with its beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches. Further along is Knockadoon. The visitor is spoilt for choice with major visitors attraction such as Cobh Heritage Centre, based in the disused portions of the railway station at Cobh. This highly imaginative visitor attraction tells the story of emigration from Cobh in the period of the famine in 1845 up to the era of the great Liners in the 1950s. Jameson Heritage Centre in Midleton County Cork which tells the story of the manufacture of whiskey, and Fota Wildlife Park. For the golfer there is a choice of 10 golf courses within 10 miles of Ballycotton. In past years this tiny village had hosted the very popular Ballycotton 10 mile Road Race. Now there is the local Ballintotis 4 Mile Road Race.
